What Anointing Cannot Do For You

I had to hear 6 times that I am an anointed Prophet of God Almighty before I wanted to belief it.  I even heard it from a witch. My burning desire was to save every soul and to heal every sick person. In my naivety, I thought that all that I needed for effective ministry is power, power and power.

I can recollect a particular fasting with a friend. I intended to spend three days, but the Lord met me after the first day and spoke so clearly that I realized there and then that power alone is not enough nor sufficient for an effective ministry. Since then, I have tried to work on those things and they had brought great dividends to my life and ministry.

Biblical Foundation

True anointing refers to the hand of God upon a person’s life; outstanding gifts, calling and supernatural endowments. It is the power and presence of God in a person’s life that enables him to accomplish mighty things in life and ministry. ”But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.” - Acts 1:8

”A man’s gift maketh room for him, and bringeth him before great men” – Proverbs 18:16

Anointing is very necessary and crucial in life and ministry. Make no mistake about it; no one can really succeed in life and ministry without the presence and power of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit that gives the anointing is the third person of the Trinity. It is His presence and power in us, upon us and through us that will enable us to carry out the work of the ministry. I hope you realize that ministry alone is not preaching, teaching and leading people. It is also serving, helping, supporting, encouraging and empowering others.

The place and power of the anointing in our lives and ministries cannot be overemphasized. Jesus had to instruct His disciples to wait for the presence, person and power of the Holy Spirit before they can carry out their callings successfully. The Holy Spirit came upon them in Acts 2:1-4 ”And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.”

This experience was the turning point in the life and ministry of the Apostles. They were never the same again. Timid disciples became bold witnesses for the Lord. No one can make a true headway in ministry without the presence and power of the Holy Spirit.

Even our Lord Jesus was endued with the Holy Spirit during His earthly ministry. ”How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil: for God was with him”Acts 10:38.

The anointing of the Holy Spirit was the secret behind the powerful ministry of our Lord. All He did was not because of His divinity, but because He was filled and possessed with the Spirit in measureless fullness. The anointing of the Holy Spirit is a necessary criterion for those who want to do great works for the Lord today.

Important Distinction

I need to make a very clear distinction here. There is a difference between the Spirit and His Power. If you notice in all the Scriptures quoted above, you’ll see that it is Holy Spirit and Power. It is possible to have the Spirit without His powerful manifestations with gifts, miracles, signs and wonders and vice versa.

In Luke chapter 4, Jesus was filled with the Spirit and He only returned in the Power of the Spirit, in verse 14, after periods of fasting and prayers. Born again Christians have the Spirit and are filled with the Spirit in greater measure after the baptism of the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in tongues, but the power will only begin to manifest after times of protracted fasting and prayers.

The reality and extremes of today is that many have focused on the power, gifts and demonstrations of the Spirit, not on His person and presence. The person of the Holy Spirit has been neglected but His power and gifts are being sought. The truth is that majority are using the Power of the Holy Spirit and gifts for their selfish ends.

The Spirit is being used for personal gain, not for fellowship purposes. And when this is the case, the Spirit is grieved, quenched and vexed. That is why despite manifestations of the anointing here and there, there are still lots of pollution, sin, wickedness and corruption in the church and in the lives of preachers.

What The Anointing Can Do For You

The true purpose of the anointing is service. It is to glorify the Lord and benefit humanity. Anointing can quicken you, empower, enable and embolden you to stand before people and do great miracles, signs and wonders. From Psalm 89:20-26, we can deduce that the anointing will strengthen, energize and equip you to beat down the enemies of God, glorify God in your life, bring people to you and draw crowds to your meetings. It brings God’s authority into your life and you are able to destroy the yokes that the devil had placed in people’s lives.

Anointing makes you a channel of blessing to others and you can function effectively in the area of your calling. Healings, miracles, signs and wonders will be a daily occurrence when the anointing is fresh and full upon you. Demons and powers of darkness will flee before you and much more will be accomplished for the kingdom of God. However, this treasure is in earthen vessel. ”But we have this treasure in earthen vessels that the excellence of the power may be of God and not of us.“ - 2 Corinthians 4:7. The treasure in human vessel makes ministry easy. It helps you to serve others and bring them to Him. It helps you to use your gifts and callings to glorify Him and show Him to others.

What Anointing Cannot Do For You

It was said of A. A. Allen, a great healing evangelist in America, that while he was heavily drunk and in a state of stupor, he was called upon by a woman to pray for her because she was sick. Allen replied; be healed in Jesus name ‘, and the woman was healed! Also, many Prophets, Evangelists, Apostles and Preachers have noted that despite their sinful living, yet miracles are still happening through them.

Well, the sad reality is that gifts and miraculous manifestations can still happen, long after the Spirit had been quenched. Remember,  King Saul still reigned 20 more years, even after God had rejected him as king and chosen another person!

The larger life image that miracle preachers have projected coupled with extreme emphasis on the anointing have not made us to realize that there are things the anointing cannot do for us. The reality of life and ministry is that, no matter how anointed you are, your anointing cannot do the following for you:

Anointing cannot address your character weakness.

Anointing cannot reform your bad attitudes.

Anointing cannot remind you what you don’t know.

Anointing cannot cover your excesses and pettiness.

Anointing cannot help your self-indulgence.

Anointing cannot cover your sinful tendencies.

Anointing cannot force you to change.

Anointing cannot force you to be responsible.

Anointing cannot think for you.

Despite your anointing, you’ll have to do all these by yourself. Of course, you’ll need the grace of God, but the willingness must come from you first. If you decide to leave all these areas unaddressed in your life, then the anointing will eventually kill you. Anointing will help you to start well, but you may not end well, if you don’t work on these areas.

Gifts can open doors for you, but your choices can close them too. Anointing allows you to stand out, but it can also bring you down. Gifts can give you opportunities, but gifts alone can also shut doors against you. Anointing cannot protect you against Satan – only holy living will do.

The Bible says, ”Put on the whole armour of God, not put on the whole anointing!” When you rely only on anointing and neglect to learn, work, improve and develop yourself, then you are setting up yourself for a great fall.

Allow me to share with you the story of three preachers. The names of these three preachers are:

Chuck Templeton, Bran Clifford and Billy Graham

Chuck Templeton and Bran Clifford were preaching dynamos. One University president, after hearing Templeton preached to a crowd of several thousand, called him the most talented and gifted young preacher in the United States.

In 1946, the National Association for Evangelicals published an article listing the men who had the most effective ministries in the previous five years. Templeton, then an evangelist for Youth for Christ, was a major profile in the article.

Bran Clifford was also believed to be someone who would greatly impact the church world. When Clifford preached at a chapel service at Baylor University, the president of the University was so awed by his preaching that he ordered the school bells turned off, so there would be no interruption.

In his book, `Lead on’, John Haggai wrote, “At the age of 25, young Clifford touched more lives, influenced more leaders and set more attendance records than any other clergy man of his age in American history. National leaders vied for his attention. He was tall, handsome, intelligent and eloquent. Hollywood invited him to audition for the part of Marcellus in the Robe. It seemed as if he had everything”

Both Templeton and Clifford started out strong. But by 1950, Templeton left the ministry in pursuit of a career as a radio and television commentator. He eventually decided that he no longer believed in conservative Christianity. Clifford’s story is nothing short of tragic. By 1954, he had left his wife and his two children, who had Down Syndrome’. Alcohol had been the vice that destroyed his life. He ended up selling used cars in the Texas Panhandle. Only nine years after being the most sought after preacher in the United States, Clifford was found dead in a sleazy motel room outside Amarillo, Texas .

The third preacher is Billy Graham. While Templeton and Clifford were enjoying their early success, Graham was establishing boundaries within his personal life and ministry that would ensure his longevity. And truly, Billy Graham had endured long years of ministry without scandals. I always say that I am not in a hurry to get to the top, because when I get there, I want to remain there for a very long time to come. And that means one must imbibe those things that would make the anointing to last.

Why anointing alone is not enough

To truly succeed in life and ministry, anointing alone is not enough. This is so because ministry is not only about power demonstration, miracles, signs and wonders. It is also about fruits of godliness and righteousness.  As a saved sinner, you are still responsible for your growth, overcome the flesh, live a godly life, discipline your appetites and watch and pray. Being truly anointed sets you up as veritable target of Satan and his demons and followers and you’ll need to watch and keep yourself from besetting sins and pollutions of life and ministry. Temptations abound everywhere and you’ll need to be careful, prayerful and watchful. Anointing and giftedness has a way of bringing attention to you. You’ll need to remain humble and return all the glory to God. To do that is easier said than done. It will take real self-discipline and great workings of God in your heart. And you cannot get that without kneeling before God in solitude for a long and consistent time.

A Pastor came to me to confess his personal sins after listening to a particular touching message. He told me of how God had greatly called and anointed him with power. He usually witness mighty prophetic and miraculous demonstrations in his ministry. But he is still battling with lust and immorality. I prayed with him and counselled him and he was free. He started learning, improving, changing and working on several areas of his life. Today, his ministry is blossoming.

I need to reiterate that you need the anointing, but you need much more than it to do a lasting work. You need the anointing plus other essential things that will bring you real, true and durable success in life and ministry.

If you need to sanctify yourself please email us as we will be going through the sanctification process over the next couple of days starting on 1 June 2012.  Even if you’ve already done this it is a good thing to do it again.
